Overview

The Database Administrator (DBA) will be responsible for administering and supporting SQL Server environments, while also managing Azure Cosmos DB workloads for optimal performance and scalability. This role involves both remote work and occasional on-site attendance as required in Edinburgh, focusing on improving database performance and ensuring data security and compliance. The DBA will collaborate with engineering teams to modernize data platforms and enhance service delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Administer and support SQL Server environments across development, test, and production.
  • Manage and optimise Azure Cosmos DB workloads for performance and scalability.
  • Identify and resolve database performance issues impacting legacy systems.
  • Improve query performance, indexing strategies, and reduce latency.
  • Implement monitoring, alerting, and capacity planning improvements.
  • Ensure data security, access control, and compliance with GDPR standards.
  • Support the modernisation of data platforms and ongoing service improvements.

Requirements

  • Strong SQL Server DBA experience within live production environments.
  • Proven expertise in performance tuning and resolving database bottlenecks.
  • Hands-on experience with Azure Cosmos DB, including indexing and partitioning.
  • Understanding of HA/DR principles and database resilience.
  • Experience working in collaborative engineering or delivery teams.
  • Ideally, exposure to public sector or highly regulated environments.
