Overview
The Field Engineer will play a key role in ensuring the reliability and performance of critical utilities infrastructure throughout Scotland. This position involves hands-on installation, commissioning, and maintenance of telecom and IP equipment in the field, requiring flexibility for 24/7 assurance coverage. The engineer will collaborate with teams to deliver expert support and troubleshooting services on-site.
Responsibilities
- Install and commission DC chargers, PDH, SDH, Comtel, Microwave radio, and IP networking equipment.
- Erect EMC cabinets and power racks, and install cable containment systems.
- Terminate and wire SWA, CAT5, and multi-pair copper cables.
- Configure Cisco and Alcatel switches/routers and IP telephony systems.
- Test protection services and bearers across different networking standards.
- Perform routine maintenance on battery chargers, fiber optics, and radio systems.
- Conduct site surveys and risk assessments, producing detailed documentation.
- Provide first-line support and troubleshooting for IP and telecoms infrastructure.
Requirements
- Proven experience in telecoms field engineering, especially with DC chargers, PDH, SDH, Comtel, and Microwave radio.
- Strong knowledge of Cisco and Alcatel routing and switching products.
- LAN/WAN internetworking skills and experience with IP networking.
- Experience in high-voltage substation environments (11kV to 400kV).
- Full UK Driving Licence required.
- Desirable authorisations include SPEN Authorisations and National Grid Authorised certifications.
- Training will be provided for some desirable authorisations and competencies if not already held.
