Overview
The HV Commissioning Engineer will play a crucial role in supporting the commissioning activities on a 33kV Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project. This position involves close collaboration with site teams, contractors, and client representatives to ensure the successful testing, commissioning, and energisation of high voltage equipment and protection systems while adhering to safety and project specifications.
Responsibilities
- Carry out commissioning activities on 33kV HV equipment in line with approved procedures and project requirements.
- Test and commission HV switchgear, transformers, protection relays, CT/VT circuits, control circuits, and associated equipment.
- Perform secondary injection, functional testing, trip testing, and scheme checks.
- Review electrical drawings, schematics, wiring diagrams, protection settings, and commissioning documentation.
- Identify, record, and report defects, non-conformances, and outstanding works.
- Complete commissioning records, test sheets, red-line mark-ups, and handover documentation.
- Liaise with site teams, client representatives, contractors, and design engineers throughout the commissioning process.
- Support energisation activities and ensure systems are ready for safe operation.
Requirements
- Proven experience commissioning HV electrical systems, ideally at 33kV.
- Experience in BESS, renewable energy, grid connection, substation, or power infrastructure projects.
- Strong background in protection and control testing.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, SLDs, and commissioning documentation.
- Experience using relay testing equipment such as Omicron, Megger, or similar.
- Good understanding of HV safety procedures, permit systems, and safe systems of work.
- Strong problem-solving skills to identify and resolve technical issues.
- Relevant electrical qualifications and a valid ECS/CSCS card or equivalent.
