Overview
The Interim Head of Engineering will lead a transformative initiative at a financial services firm, tasked with restructuring the engineering function and modernizing practices across a team of approximately 45 engineers. Working under the direction of a new CTO, the contractor will focus on retiring legacy systems, enhancing quality assurance, and embedding advanced technological tools within a regulated environment. This position offers the opportunity to implement real change while collaborating with senior leadership, including the Chief Architect, to establish effective engineering and architectural standards.
Responsibilities
- Take ownership of the engineering function and restructure it into mission-aligned squads with clear backlogs and outcomes.
- Drive improvements in engineering practices, including the introduction of DORA metrics and embedding DevSecOps.
- Lead the adoption of AI development tooling in a secure manner appropriate for a financial services environment.
- Work collaboratively with senior stakeholders, including the Chief Architect, to define and maintain engineering standards.
- Assess and develop the existing engineering leadership team, making necessary changes to align with the new model.
- Represent the engineering function at the senior stakeholder level, ensuring visibility up to the Board level.
Requirements
- Deep experience with .NET and Azure, with a strong understanding of legacy systems.
- Proven track record in leading engineering transformation in a regulated financial services context.
- Experience in implementing DORA metrics and modern DevSecOps practices.
- Strong understanding of AI-assisted development and its application within engineering.
- Personal authority to assess team capabilities and facilitate trust during periods of change.
- Technical credibility to engage and challenge engineering decisions effectively.
