Overview
We are seeking an experienced Interim Head of Strategic Planning to lead the Dorset Local Plan's delivery. This position offers the opportunity to provide strategic oversight and manage a team of approximately 50 staff, while reporting directly to high-level executives within the Council. The role requires a collaborative approach, working closely with various stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of the new Local Plan and Design Guide under current planning policies.
Responsibilities
- Lead the development and delivery of Dorset's Local Plan and Design Guide.
- Establish project governance, critical path timelines, and robust programme management arrangements.
- Drive progress to ensure key planning milestones and objectives are achieved.
- Manage the Spatial Planning Service to align resources with Local Plan delivery.
- Engage closely with Cabinet Members, Councillors, and key stakeholders.
- Build strong relationships across the Council and with external partners.
- Ensure compliance with governance, financial, procurement, and health & safety requirements.
Requirements
- Significant senior-level experience within Strategic Planning in Local Government.
- Proven track record of successfully delivering and adopting Local Plans.
- Strong expertise in strategic planning policy, NPPF, and relevant legislation.
- Experience influencing senior leaders and statutory stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to lead large multidisciplinary teams and deliver complex programmes.
- Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills.
- Ability to quickly establish credibility and drive organisational change.
