The Interim Lead for Strategic Planning will spearhead the development of the Dorset Local Plan, focusing on delivering high-quality strategic outcomes aligned with the National Planning Policy Framework. This role involves collaboration with senior stakeholders including the Corporate Director for Planning and the Executive Director for Economy and Environment, while overseeing a large team within the Planning Department. The successful candidate will draw on their extensive experience in local government strategic planning to drive projects forward effectively and ensure compliance with council regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Establish a critical path timeline and robust project management framework for the new Local Plan.
  • Drive tangible progress on the Local Plan and Design Guide for Dorset through effective leadership.
  • Ensure the Spatial Planning Team's resources are aligned with the objectives of the Local Plan.
  • Engage closely with senior stakeholders, maximizing face-to-face collaboration.
  • Manage compliance with financial, procurement, and health and safety regulations within the council.

Requirements

  • Significant experience in a senior role within Local Government Strategic Planning.
  • Demonstrated track record of producing and adopting Local Plans.
  • Extensive experience in stakeholder management and influencing senior decision makers.
  • Strong project management skills and expertise in programme delivery.
  • Deep understanding of the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) and local political contexts.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary teams in a strategic planning environment.
