Overview
We are looking for a SQL Server Performance & Data Warehouse Consultant to oversee a critical performance optimisation program within a substantial SQL Server environment. This hybrid role involves collaboration with the Data Engineering team to evaluate existing systems, identify key performance bottlenecks, and implement solutions that enhance the overall database performance and scalability. The consultant will conclude their engagement by providing a prioritised roadmap, alongside thorough documentation and knowledge transfer to enable ongoing support and improvements.
Responsibilities
- Assess database architecture, storage, filegroups and maintenance strategies.
- Analyse workloads to identify performance, storage and capacity issues.
- Develop sustainable storage optimisation and capacity management strategies.
- Optimise query performance through execution plans, indexing and statistics.
- Diagnose complex SQL Server issues including blocking, deadlocks, and parallelism.
- Maximise SQL Server 2022 capabilities including Intelligent Query Processing and Query Store.
- Produce a prioritised remediation roadmap balancing technical benefit and operational risk.
- Deliver comprehensive documentation, recommendations and knowledge transfer.
Requirements
- Extensive experience managing and optimising large-scale Microsoft SQL Server Enterprise environments.
- Expert knowledge of SQL Server storage engine internals, database architecture, and storage optimisation.
- Deep expertise in query optimisation, execution plans, and indexing.
- Strong experience troubleshooting production performance using Query Store and DMVs.
- Hands-on experience with SQL Server 2022 features.
- Proven delivery of complex SQL Server optimisation programmes with strong analytical skills.
- Strong understanding of enterprise data warehouse optimisation including partitioning and indexing.
- Experience optimising ETL workloads and enterprise reporting platforms is desirable.
