Content Designer

Overview

We are seeking an experienced Lead Content Designer for a 6-week contract focused on a digital project for a UK Government department. The role requires joining an agile, multi-disciplinary team to deliver rapid Discovery and Alpha phases, ensuring content solutions are aligned with user needs and government standards. The contractor will collaborate with user researchers and design stakeholders, synthesizing insights and implementing actionable content strategies within a tight timeline.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the content strategy and design across a 6-week sprint covering Discovery and rapid Alpha prototyping.
  • Collaborate closely with User Researchers, Interaction Designers, and Product Managers to define user needs, domain language, and pain points.
  • Map complex journeys and draft, iterate, and test accessible content concepts.
  • Ensure all content approaches align with the GDS Service Standard, GOV.UK style guidelines, and accessibility regulations.
  • Prepare compelling content artifacts and evidence to support assessment milestones and handover/continuation phases.

Requirements

  • Proven experience in the UK Public Sector or Government Digital Service (GDS) environments.
  • Demonstrated capability in fast-paced Discovery phases with outcomes-focused results.
  • In-depth knowledge of the GDS Service Standard and GOV.UK Design System.
  • Experience working in agile, cross-functional teams with minimal oversight.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills and experience engaging with policy teams and senior stakeholders.
  • Eligibility for BPSS and UK residency are required.
