Overview
The Hardware Technician will work predominantly on-site to support upgrades from 4G to 5G communications units at train depots. This hands-on position involves disassembling and upgrading communication units, installing and configuring software, and performing functional testing. The technician will work independently and interact closely with depot personnel and engineers, ensuring efficient service and accurate documentation of tasks completed.
Responsibilities
- Disassemble communications units and replace hardware including 5G modem modules.
- Install and configure updated software on hardware communication units.
- Conduct functional testing of upgraded units to ensure performance.
- Perform basic fault finding and triage on faulty equipment.
- Package faulty equipment for repair and maintain accurate records of work completed.
- Liaise with depot personnel and engineers to facilitate smooth operations.
- Use hand tools carefully while handling electronic components.
- Record work using Teams, email, and spreadsheets effectively.
Requirements
- Practical experience with computer/electronic hardware disassembly and assembly.
- Previous experience in fault finding, troubleshooting, or hardware triage.
- Proficient with hand tools and careful handling of electronic components.
- Good general IT skills, including software installation and configuration.
- Ability to follow technical procedures and work independently.
- Familiarity with basic command-line instructions and BIOS/configuration tasks.
- Attention to detail and reliability in recording work accurately.
- Basic electrical awareness and comfort working around electrical equipment.
