Overview
The Server Migration Engineer will play a crucial role in delivering complex migrations as part of a large-scale infrastructure separation programme. This position requires hands-on expertise in Windows Server and Active Directory, as the engineer will work embedded within a live programme across multiple regions. The role focuses on executing migration strategies and ensuring operational continuity in a technically demanding environment without providing advisory services.
Responsibilities
- Plan and execute server migrations across Windows environments, including domain-to-domain moves and Active Directory separations.
- Manage pre and post-migration validation focusing on application servers, identity dependencies, and network connectivity.
- Utilize Azure IaaS for managing virtual networks and supporting hosted workloads during the separation process.
- Provide immediate break-fix support for failed migrations, quickly restoring operational integrity.
- Drive automation and configuration management through PowerShell and relevant tools like DSC or SCCM.
- Contribute to documentation such as runbooks, rollback plans, and change control, ensuring clear communication with stakeholders.
Requirements
- Deep hands-on Windows Server administration experience (2016 to 2022), including build, configuration, and maintenance.
- Demonstrable expertise in Active Directory migration, including domain moves and Group Policy management.
- Extensive experience with Azure IaaS, particularly in managing virtual networks and hybrid environments.
- Strong fundamentals in networking, including VLANs, VPNs, and TLS management.
- Previous experience in a high-availability, 24/7 operational environment with minimal downtime tolerance.
- Experience in large-scale data centre migrations or M&A separations is highly desirable.
- Some exposure to Linux systems is beneficial but primarily focused on Windows expertise.
