Overview
The Lead Commissioning Engineer will play a critical role in the SSEN 400kV GIS Substation Extension project, overseeing the commissioning program for new assets integration into an existing operational substation. The incumbent will coordinate with various stakeholders while ensuring compliance with technical standards and project timelines. This position offers the opportunity to lead a significant 12-month contract in a dynamic work environment, with the potential for extensions.
Responsibilities
- Lead and coordinate commissioning activities for the 400kV GIS substation extension, from pre-commissioning through to final energisation and handover.
- Manage the commissioning and integration of new 400kV GIS bays and associated primary plant into the existing operational substation.
- Coordinate primary and secondary commissioning activities across GIS, protection, control, interlocking, and auxiliary systems.
- Oversee IEC 61850 testing and integration between new and existing protection and control systems.
- Plan and coordinate commissioning activities around existing live 400kV infrastructure, outages, and staged energisations.
- Develop, review, and manage commissioning programmes, procedures, ITPs, test documentation, and energisation plans.
- Coordinate commissioning engineers, OEM representatives, subcontractors, and other project stakeholders.
- Liaise closely with SSEN Transmission throughout testing, outage, energisation, and handover activities.
Requirements
- Proven experience as a Lead/Senior Commissioning Engineer on 400kV transmission substations.
- Strong experience commissioning 400kV GIS and associated HV primary plant.
- Valid or previous SSEN authorisation strongly preferred, but not essential.
- Strong understanding of busbar protection and IEC 61850 systems.
- Strong knowledge of protection, control, and secondary systems.
- Experience working on substation extensions, brownfield interfaces, and existing live HV infrastructure.
- Experience coordinating outages, staged energisation, and handover of transmission assets.
- Excellent leadership, technical coordination, and communication skills.
