Data Custodian

Overview

The Data Custodian will play a pivotal role in managing, protecting, and governing business data within a designated domain. Working in a hybrid model, the contractor will collaborate with business users, data teams, and Information & Knowledge Management teams to ensure effective data management practices are implemented and maintained. This position is suitable for both experienced data professionals transitioning into a business-facing role, as well as early-career candidates with a strong technical interest in data governance.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the data custodian for an assigned business domain, developing an understanding of business data usage and governance.
  • Create and maintain data catalogues, data dictionaries, and business glossaries to ensure data accuracy.
  • Define and maintain business policies and procedures for data classification, retention, and disposal.
  • Establish business requirements for data backup and recovery, ensuring proper controls are in place.
  • Monitor backup execution, validate backup integrity, and review data protection arrangements.
  • Support the management of data access controls to protect sensitive information.
  • Facilitate data governance compliance and auditing activities, including access and classification reviews.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to translate governance requirements into operational and technical controls.

Requirements

  • Experience in data architecture, data engineering, data analysis, or related disciplines.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Azure, Microsoft 365, SharePoint, and Power Automate.
  • Understanding of data governance, records management, and data classification concepts.
  • Knowledge of backup, recovery, and resilience principles.
  • Experience with data catalogues, data dictionaries, and business glossaries.
  • Familiarity with collaboration platforms such as BlueJay is advantageous.
  • UKSV Security Clearance is required.
