Overview

The Director of Data will lead the transformation of a complex data and AI function within a well-established UK retail and consumer business. This interim role requires a hands-on leader to stabilize data operations, modernize legacy systems, and implement clear data standards. Collaborating closely with stakeholders, the Director will translate technical concepts into actionable insights while managing a small team, ensuring the delivery of a unified customer data platform and robust financial reporting.

Responsibilities

  • Stabilise the data function and implement new data standards across the organization.
  • Operationalise lineage practices to improve data reliability and reduce system fragility.
  • Develop a unified customer and commercial data capability alongside finance reporting systems.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to translate technical realities into strategic narratives.
  • Manage and grow a small data team while addressing demanding stakeholder requests.
  • Implement multi-system integrations focusing on materialised views and real-time data routing.
  • Leverage hands-on AI and ML experience to enhance data strategies.

Requirements

  • Proven experience modernising legacy data systems in a large enterprise environment.
  • In-depth knowledge of data lineage tooling and concepts related to Customer Data Platforms (CDP).
  • Hands-on experience with financial data integration and multi-system data management.
  • Strong background in AI and machine learning, with a focus on practical application.
  • Comfortable presenting complex data stories to senior stakeholders.
  • Ability to navigate ambiguity in an interim leadership role.
